Methodology & Sources

The calculator is built from two clearly separated layers: published third-party sizing data, and the SizeMyGear rules that turn that data into a recommendation.

Published source data

These are public sizing charts and guidance documents. SizeMyGear stores the published rows exactly as published, including overlapping and open-ended rows.

SizeMyGear logic

SizeMyGear does not reproduce or claim to use the internal calculator formula of Jones, evo, or any manufacturer.

The published data is turned into a recommendation in five deterministic steps:

  1. Published weight ranges are matched against the rider's weight.
  2. One finite base range is selected with deterministic SizeMyGear rules. No interpolation is used and no new range is invented.
  3. That base range is split into lower, balanced and upper zones, covering every whole centimetre exactly once.
  4. Skill level and riding style select a starting zone. The published 1–3 cm style adjustments are deliberately not applied mechanically.
  5. Published boot-size guidance provides a waist-width reference for the same boot size.

The zone selection described above is SizeMyGear logic applied to published ranges. It is not a third-party official formula, and it is documented in the project source alongside the data it uses.

The 225+ lb open-ended overlap

The published Jones chart contains an overlapping 225+ lb / 165+ cm open-ended range. For 225–230 lb inputs, SizeMyGear keeps the finite 215–230 lb range as the practical calculation range and surfaces the overlap as a source note.

Limitations

  • Model-specific geometry can differ between boards of the same length.

    The current calculator tends toward the lower part of the published range for freestyle and park riding. Freestyle riders who prioritize larger jumps and landing support may prefer a longer size.

  • Should I size up for powder?

    The current calculator tends toward the upper part of the published range for powder riding. Volume-shifted powder boards can use very different sizing, so check the model's own guidance as well.

  • Do I need a wide snowboard?

    That depends on your boot size and the geometry of the specific board. The calculator uses published generic waist-width guidance and may also show manufacturer-specific reference data for larger boots, but you should check the specific manufacturer's guidance before buying.

  • What if I am between snowboard sizes?

    The calculator splits the published range into a lower, balanced and upper zone and highlights one of them as a starting zone. The shorter zone tends to feel more playful, the middle zone is a general starting point, and the longer zone tends toward more stability.
